Trying to decide if you should color your hair at home? If you’ve got a love-bond with your stylist (and who doesn’t?) and are desperately missing that color-magic they work on your hair, join the crowd.
Most of us haven’t been to the salon for weeks now. Yay for responsible social distancing and the positive impact each of us can make, but a big Boo when we catch ourselves on the screen in our Zoom meetings – or at least that’s the case for some of us.
Drab hair color and roots are messing with our mojo. And that’s not helping at a time when you have to stare at yourself more than ever. So we asked our Color Wow team of salon experts to weigh in on the question most of us are struggling with: Is it better to make do, or dye?
Here’s what they told us:
HAIR CARE TIPS AT HOME: HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR COLOR
BEFORE you pick up a drugstore brand or order color online GET IN TOUCH WITH YOUR STYLIST. That’s right: phone, text, email. (If you don’t have it, you can get their contact info from the salon.)
Your stylist is missing you, too, and really wants to help you get through these shelter-at-home days. Your stylist really, really cares about you and the health of your hair.
Is box dye bad for hair?
DIY hair color can really wreak havoc on the quality of your hair and the color. Dying/bleaching hair is not only an art, but it requires technical training to fully understand the effects of chemical processing on the hair. It is more complex than you might imagine and ideally should be done by a professional in order to achieve the right color with the least amount of damage.
OK you’re thinking, I get that, but my salon is closed, and I need to do something fast! The best thing you can do is try to get in touch with your stylist. Not only for you but for them. Service businesses are ones that are being hurt more than most, so calling them for advice is a win/win. They can help you and you can help them. Some colorists are making up individual kits and dropping them outside their homes or salons for pick up.
IF THAT’S NOT AN OPTION, HERE’S HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR HAIR COLOR AND KEEP IT LOOKING BRIGHT…
Our colorists recommend using Color Wow Dream Filter once a week to lift off the minerals that cling to your hair from city or well water. These minerals distort your color and leave it looking drab and discolored. Our experts recommend using a shampoo that leaves no residues, which will further dull the hair. Most shampoos do contain ingredients that stay behind, but all the ingredients in Color Wow Shampoo rinse completely off. Next, use our Root Cover Up. It’s won Allure’s Best Root Cover Up 7 years in a row. It’s easy to use, no mess, blends seamlessly, and voíla, it looks like you’ve just been to the salon. No tell-tale signs.
AS A LAST RESORT
Is boxed dye bad for hair? Yes. So try to stay away from box color. If you must, then use a semi-permanent color that does not require bleach. (Why? Bleach weakens and damages your hair so a formula without bleach is the safest to use.) The color will wash out in 5 to 10 shampoos.
We are all facing very challenging times but by helping each other, we can diminish the harsh consequences this virus has caused on many levels. For those of you who have not been severely affected economically, perhaps when thinking about holiday and birthday gifts you could consider purchasing a gift certificate to your local salon. This small business community is really suffering. Any help would I’m sure be very much appreciated.
Thank you from all of us at Color Wow. We hope that this blog has been of some help.
