How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?

You've probably heard conflicting advice about how often you should wash your hair. Some say daily washing is essential for maintaining a healthy scalp and hair, while others argue that less frequent washing is better. So, what's the truth?

Washing Hair Every Day: Is it Necessary?

Daily hair washing is not necessary for everyone. However, it's important to note that the ideal frequency of hair washing varies from person to person.

Factors such as hair type, scalp condition, and lifestyle can all influence how often you should wash your hair.

For example, individuals with oily hair may need to wash more frequently to remove excess oil, while those with dry hair may benefit from washing less often to retain natural moisture.

This is what our founder, Gail Federici, has to say about the matter:

Daily, weekly, every few days....you should wash your hair whenever it’s dirty due to pollution, sweat, cell turnover or product build up.

The key is to keep the scalp clean. So if that requires daily shampooing, that's fine.
It won't harm the hair. If your hair is dry, then most likely fewer washes will do.

We’ve outlined some of the factors that may influence how often you should wash your hair below:

1. Oiliness

oily scalpOiliness is one of the key factors to consider when figuring out the best wash-day routine for your hair.  The sebaceous glands on your scalp produce natural oils, known as sebum, which help condition and protect your hair.

However, some individuals naturally produce more sebum than others, resulting in oilier hair.

If you have oily hair, washing it every day may be necessary to keep grease at bay. Be sure to use a gentle shampoo that won't strip away natural oils, and focus on cleansing your scalp rather than aggressively scrubbing your hair strands.

2. Physical Conditions

If you’re an athlete, gym-goer or regularly engage in sweat-producing activities or have a job that exposes your hair to dust and pollutants, you may need to wash it more frequently to maintain cleanliness and scalp health.

Consider the specific demands of your lifestyle and adjust your hair washing routine accordingly. And when you shampoo, use a residue-free shampoo which will help remove product buildup and environmental impurities effectively without leaving any more buildup behind.

3. Climate & Humidity

frizzy hairThe climate where you live definitely impacts your hair washing needs. In humid environments, hair tends to get frizzy and greasy more quickly, requiring more frequent washing.

On the other hand, dry climates tend to dehydrate hair which can make it brittle and prone to breakage, requiring less frequent washing and more focus on moisturizing and hydrating treatments.

What Happens If You Don’t Wash Your Hair Regularly?

Going too long without washing your hair can also have negative effects.

dr joe cincotta“Not washing hair regularly will lead to buildup of sebum, dead skin cells, grime, bacteria, fungus, salts (from sweat) and hair product residues on the scalp,” according to Color Wow Chemist, Dr. Joe Cincotta, Ph.D

“This buildup will lead to irritation, inflammation, even possible hair loss. I recommend that hair and scalp should be cleansed at least once a week. Having a healthy scalp is essential to having a lifetime of healthy hair!”

regular washing vs inconsistent washing

Beyond basic hygiene, not washing your hair regularly can also impact its appearance.

Over time, the accumulation of dirt and oil can make your hair look dull, flat, and lifeless.

It may also affect the effectiveness of hair styling products, as they may not be able to penetrate through the buildup to provide the desired styling results.

Whatever the Frequency You Decide, the Shampoo You Use Is Key

It's critical that the shampoo you use does not contain ingredients that will not easily rinse off.

Unfortunately, most shampoos do contain ingredients like silicones, conditioning agents, thickening resins, etc. that coat the hair and scalp, which not only dulls, hair and weighs it down, but, much worse, can even block follicles and impede new hair growth.

“Practically all shampoos on the market today which claim anything other than cleansing hair (i.e. conditioning, defrizzing, thickening…) contain ingredients engineered to stay behind on your hair,” Dr. Joe explains.

“Unfortunately, these ingredients also build up on your scalp. Ingredient buildup on scalp traps bacteria, dead skin cells, sebum, grime … which leads to scalp irritation, infection and possible hair loss.”

This is why Dr. Joe strongly recommends one of our 100% clean, residue-free shampoos: Color Wow Color Security Shampoo or Curl Wow Hooked Shampoo.

Our advanced sulfate-free cleansers are the first formulations to ban these potentially harmful and totally unnecessary ingredients:

  • NO sulfates
  • NO silicones
  • NO thickening agents
  • NO conditioning agents
  • NO pearlizing agents
  • NO oils

These ingredients have nothing to do with cleaning; in fact, because they don’t rinse away, they leave the hair feeling “coated” and “dirty”. For a truly clean, fresh scalp, it’s essential to use a no-residue shampoo.

Tips for Optimal Hair Washing

To ensure you're taking care of your hair and scalp, here are some tips for optimal hair washing:

  1. Consider your hair type: Different hair types have different needs. If you have oily hair, you may need to wash more frequently, while those with dry hair may benefit from less frequent washing.

  2. Use the right products: Choose shampoos and conditioners that are suitable for your hair type and concerns. Look for gentle formulas that won't strip away too much natural oil.

  3. Don't forget to condition: The job of your shampoo is to CLEANSE, and the best shampoo formulas will not contain conditioning agents that remain in your hair. So post-shampoo conditioning is an essential step in your hair care routine.

It helps to moisturize and nourish your hair, making it more manageable and less prone to breakage.

  4. Massage your scalp: While washing your hair, take the time to massage your scalp gently. This stimulates blood flow and promotes a healthy scalp environment.

This is another reason why it’s super important to use a residue-free shampoo. Your shampoo is the only product that you massage into your scalp. And you definitely DON’T want to be massaging in ingredients that will buildup and cause scalp issues.

  5. Avoid hot water: Hot water can strip away natural oils and cause dryness. Opt for lukewarm or cool water instead.
