HAIR TIPS: HOW TO TAME FLYAWAYS WITH CHRIS APPLETON

The secret to a perfect celebrity hairstyle? A few tricks with a special hairspray. We sat down with renowned Celeb Hair Stylist Chris Appleton to learn how to tame flyaways with the help of his favorite hairspray. Here are his best hair tips:

HAIR TIP 1: HOW TO CHOOSE A HAIRSPRAY

The key to a non-stiff style with staying power is to make sure you pick a flexible formula. But there’s one more thing to keep in mind. Many aerosol hairsprays are scented to mask the icky smell associated with certain chemicals. What you might not know is that many of those fragrances contain citrus which can actually cloud your color, making it look dull and distorted. Our go-to choice is Color Wow Cult Favorite. HAIR TIP 2: HOW TO TAME FLYAWAYS WITH A BRUSH

Many people think the secret to locking in a finished style is to load it up with hairspray. The more you add, the more the look stays in place, right? Well, technically this is true. But if you take this approach, your hair is likely going to end up looking stiff and feel hard and sticky.

To prevent this, try a flexible formula. This will prevent any stiffness and ensure the hair is able to move. Second, make sure the product is evenly distributed on the hair. Now that doesn’t seem so simple when you think about the powerful burst of product that comes along with using hairspray, but this is where one of Chris Appleton’s genius hair tips comes into play. Instead of spraying product directly onto your hair, load it onto a bristle brush. Then gently brush your hair to lock it into place. If you’re rocking a down-do or a long pony, this is great for taming any flyaways down the length of your hair.

HAIR TIP 3: HOW TO TAME FLYAWAYS AROUND YOUR FACE

One of the peskiest places to deal with frizzy hair? The hair that frames the face. Baby hairs rarely want to behave and can end up laying in all sorts of directions. The solution? “I actually use a toothbrush to guide the baby hairs,” says Chris Appleton. Simply load the toothbrush up with hairspray, like you would a large paddle brush, and gently groom the baby hairs in the desired direction to lock them into place. Frizzy hair - gone in a snap.

HAIR TIP 4: HOW TO TAME FLYAWAYS ALONG THE TOP OF YOUR HEAD

We’ve talked about the length of your hair and the face frame, but what about the top of your head - like when your hair is styled into an updo and inevitably a few hairs pop out here and there? No need to fret. Hairspray comes to the rescue once more. This time you’ll mist the spray onto your hair from about a foot away, then take a hot curling iron and gently brush the barrel of the iron along the top of your head in the direction you want the hair to lay. The heat combined with the staying power of the spray seals in the style banishing frizzy hair and flyaways.
