QUESTIONS + ANSWERS

Is it bad to sleep with wet hair?

Sleeping with wet hair isn't necessarily harmful, but it can make your hair more prone to damage.

Hair is weaker and more elastic when it's wet, making it more vulnerable to stretching and breaking. As you move during the night, friction against your pillowcase can roughen the cuticle, leading to more tangles, frizz, and flyaways by morning.

There's also a common misconception that sleeping with wet hair causes hair loss. While a consistently damp scalp isn't ideal, sleeping with wet hair alone doesn't directly cause hair loss for most people.

If you do go to bed with damp hair, gently detangle it first, apply a lightweight leave-in conditioner or treatment if needed, and loosely braid or tie it back to minimize friction. Sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase can also help reduce tangles and protect the hair's smooth surface overnight.
