QUESTIONS + ANSWERS

What is the difference between a hair serum and a hair oil?

Hair serums and hair oils both promise smoother, shinier hair, but they work differently and suit different needs. Hair serums are usually formulated with silicones (like dimethicone or cyclomethicone), which form a protective, smoothing film over the outside of each hair strand. They're excellent at taming frizz instantly, adding a glassy shine, and protecting against humidity — but they don't actually nourish hair and can build up with repeated use, which is why a clarifying shampoo is important if you use them often. Hair oils vary more widely depending on the source. Some oils — like argan, marula, and camellia — are lightweight and can partially penetrate the hair shaft to improve moisture and elasticity from within. Heavier oils like castor or coconut are better as pre-shampoo treatments than leave-ins. In general: reach for a serum when you want immediate polish and frizz control for styling, and reach for an oil when you want to improve the condition and softness of your hair over time. Many people use both — oil as a treatment, serum as a finisher.
