A hair gloss (sometimes called a hair glaze or toning gloss) is a low-commitment treatment designed to amplify shine and improve the overall look and feel of hair. Unlike permanent color, a gloss sits on the outside of the hair shaft rather than penetrating the cortex, which means it gradually fades over 4–6 weeks with no harsh grow-out line. In-salon glosses are typically applied after a color service to seal in the result and add finishing shine, but standalone clear or tinted at-home glosses have grown hugely popular as a maintenance step between appointments. They work by smoothing down the cuticle layer — the microscopic scales that cover each strand — so that light reflects off the surface evenly. Some glosses also deposit a small amount of tone to neutralize brassiness or enhance warmth. Think of it as a serum, but for your color and shine, not just your styling.
