What causes dull hair?

Healthy hair shines because its outermost layer — the cuticle — lies flat and smooth, creating a consistent surface that reflects light evenly. When the cuticle is lifted or damaged, light scatters in multiple directions instead, and hair looks flat and lackluster. There are several common culprits: Heat damage from over-styling without protection is one of the biggest. Chemical processing (color, bleach, relaxers) degrades the cuticle over time. Product buildup from heavy silicones, dry shampoo, or styling products coats the hair in a way that blocks natural light reflection. Hard water deposits minerals on the hair shaft that create a rough, dull film. Dehydration and lack of moisture causes the cuticle to lift as the hair swells and shrinks. Friction from rough towel drying or cotton pillowcases physically roughens the cuticle. Addressing dull hair starts with identifying which of these factors applies to you — the fix for buildup (a clarifying shampoo) is very different from the fix for damage (a bond-repairing treatment).
